Hackettstown Holds Rental Inspection Repeal

April 30, 2008 8:49 am

Hackettstown town council unanimously tabled an ordinance Monday that would have stopped a controversial rental inspection program.

Council started the program in October 2006 to crack down on suspected residential overcrowding, or stacking.

Since its inception, local landlords have been lobbying to get rid of the program. They say it's been ineffective and feel they are unfairly charged a $120 per apartment fee to pay for the inspections.

Hackettstown Fire Fighters Receive Grant

April 16, 2008 10:00 am

Just last year, Hackettstown firefighters were forced to rescue two of their own.

During a massive house fire in Mansfield Township in February 2007, two firefighters fell through the first floor and into the basement. Thankfully they were saved.

Fireman's Fund Insurance Company is awarding a $13,337 grant to the Hackettstown Fire Department for the purchase of a new power rescue system. It encompasses an extrication kit with various saws and blades to enable firefighters to cut through debris that may prevent crews from rescuing downed firefighters in an emergency.

Town Considers Affordable Housing Proposal

April 15, 2008 8:06 am

Local lawyer and landlord offers to help Hackettstown meet its affordable quota.

A developer on Monday offered to establish five affordable-housing units in town in exchange for $250,000 from the town's affordable-housing fund.

Town council said it would consider the proposal from Robert Russell, a town lawyer and landlord.

There is precedent for such an exchange, Russell said. Washington Township, Morris County, where he lives, gave a developer $500,000 to build local affordable housing.

The money would come from Hackettstown's affordable-housing fund, which developers pay into in lieu of building required affordable housing. Hackettstown has $275,000 in its fund.

Also during the meeting the council will hold a public hearing on a proposed ordinance to amend its land development ordinance to delete senior housing in certain zones and, in its place, permit multi-family residential and commercial as conditional uses.

Farm labor pool all but dried up

April 7, 2008 7:58 am

Tougher immigrant rules leave farmers without many options when trying to harvest.

Greg Donaldson can't relate to Lou Dobbs' gripes about illegal immigrants taking Americans' jobs.

The Mansfield Township farmer says he'd love to hire his neighbors to work at his 800-acre farm, but no one is willing. And it's even tough to get immigrant workers these days, Donaldson said.

"There's definitely fewer people coming to look for work," he said. "That's probably one of the things I hate worst about farming, getting workers."

Donaldson isn't the only farmer facing a labor shortage. The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau ranks labor shortage among its top issues. The state's largest tomato producer called it quits last month out of fear he wouldn't have enough workers to pick his crop.
